There’s something fresh and exquisite about listening to blowing snow. I’m not talking about the boisterous sound of a snow blower whisking snow into the air as it ploughs down the sidewalk. I’m talking about the gentle whoosh of a winter breeze gently brushing the snowflakes through the branches of a pine tree. Stopping and listening to the ordinary sounds of the season can be a calming, but also intriguing experience. Sometimes my day is so chock full of phone calls, scheduling, meetings, driving, appointments, that the simple beauties of the day can get drowned out. But just stopping for a few minutes and recognizing the exquisiteness of a simple moment with God can yield many insights. Why do wind and snow often seem to complement each other? How can a gentle breeze create a calming moment of reflect and a fierce snowstorm send us scurrying for shelter? Why does God give us little gems of beauty throughout our day? What can seasons of snow and wind teach us about the blessings God sends us and the hardships He allows us to weather? What does enjoying a snowy vista and running from a harsh blizzard tell me about how I appreciate God’s creation? There are so many fruits that can come from slowing down and savoring God’s creation. Little things can give us big lessons, as Proverbs 30:24-28 points out when it says, “Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; hyraxes are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags; locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks; a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces.” I’d encourage you to take time to enjoy the simple beauties and ponder the little lessons that God sends our way. Sometimes life-changing insights can show up in seemingly ordinary situations.
